Sport

The school regards physical education as an important subject within the National Curriculum. Games skills are taught from an early age which develop into traditional team sports later on in school. These include rugby, netball, football, hockey, athletics and rounders, plus others. The time allocated to P.E. includes swimming for all Year 3 children for half of the school year, and there is also a provision for Gymnastics, Dance and Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA).

The older children take part in organised football, rugby and netball games with neighbouring schools. Amongst the many other sporting competitions that we enter, we participate in local Athletics meetings, a swimming gala as well as tennis, cricket, rounders and hockey competitions. The school is equipped with a large hall, small hall and adequate playing fields with markings.

We also currently employ a specialist PE teacher one day per week (Mr Seddon from St. Peter’s) using our Sports Premium funding. In addition, we welcome the Lancashire Cricket Board’s Community Cricket Coach for Wigan into school on an annual basis to work with the upper juniors. Our Foundation Stage welcome the Active Living Team from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust into school for a half term also.

We are delighted to have been awarded the School Games Gold Mark award for our contributions to school sports and Physical Education provision.
