Computing Statement of Intent

The teachers of St. James’ Catholic Primary School say…..

This subject aims to teach children the key skills which they will use throughout their lives in an ever-developing technological world. In the world around us, more and more things are becoming digital and computer based so children need to be able to keep up – almost every job now involves some degree of technology.

Through a range of topics, children can develop their knowledge and skills in digital literacy, coding and programming, computer science, media and information technology along with learning about how to stay safe online and when using technology. In all of these different aspects, children learn resilience when solving problems through debugging and logical thinking when working with different algorithms whilst always being presented with new challenges. All of this helps to develop independence, decision making and an enquiring mind as children seek to find new solutions and learn new skills. Children are encouraged to reflect on their work by finding and correcting errors and celebrating their achievements.

The subject allows children to work with a wide range of different resources such as Desktop Computers and mobile technology to ensure they have experience of different programs, apps and operating systems so they are prepared for different problems they may face in the future. Throughout their time in school, children are taught to stay safe online – both when using the internet and communicating through email and social media.
