Physical Education

P.E. Statement of Intent

The teachers of St. James’ Catholic Primary School say…..

PE is an essential subject as it helps to build confidence, create new opportunities and promote team spirit, teamwork and good sporting attitudes – all qualities which contribute to becoming a good citizen. When taught well, PE inspires children to be physically active and increases their enjoyment of school, including the promotion of good mental health and well-being. It offers a chance for the children who are more physically gifted to shine whilst giving opportunities for all children to develop their gross motor skills, strength and communication, as well as the fundamental skills of balance, control and agility. Developing an awareness of tactics enables children to enhance their decision making skills.

Not only does PE create an opportunity to build positive relationships between pupils and staff, it also builds relationships with neighbouring schools and sporting providers in our community, embedding curiosity in our children who are frequently made aware of further out of school opportunities. It gives children the chance to be young leaders, for example as Sports Ambassadors and team captains and teaches them to follow someone else’s lead when required.

It is important that children strive to achieve their potential across all activities and PE is instrumental in providing and encouraging challenge, evaluation of performance and giving opportunities for children to improve their ‘personal best’ through practice and effort. This allows them to develop their resilience. Analysing the performances of themselves and their peers allows children the opportunity of self-reflection on a regular basis.
