PSHE Statement of Intent

The teachers of St. James’ Catholic Primary School say…..

PSHE education gives pupils the knowledge, skills, and personal organisation they need to keep themselves healthy and safe and to prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. We hope that PSHE will help pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.  PSHE helps pupils to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. From making responsible decisions about their health, diet and exercise to succeeding in their first job, PSHE helps pupils gain the resilience they need to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up. In addition, we aim to develop open minded individuals who demonstrate curiosity about the world around them.

Research shows that pupils who are emotionally healthy do better at school. PSHE encourages self-reflection by supporting children’s wellbeing and tackling issues that can affect their ability to learn, such as understanding and managing their own feelings, celebrating their strengths, goal setting and taking responsibility for their own happiness. PSHE also helps pupils to develop skills and aptitudes - like teamwork, independence, communication, and resilience - that are crucial to navigating the challenges and opportunities of the modern world, and are increasingly valued by employers. We aim for our children to leave us with a ‘resilience toolbox’ full of strategies they need to succeed; such as a growth mindset, people they can turn to, the knowledge of how to break down their barriers and goals, celebrating and understanding their mistakes and the ability to resolve conflict.

An overwhelming majority of parents support the view that schools should prepare children for life and work, not just for exams. We believe that parents welcome a partnership between home and schools which supports their children’s personal and social development, and helps to deal with issues of increasing complexity such as those related to mental health and staying safe, both online and offline.

“I like PSHE because we get to talk about things that might worry you. We can talk to our teachers about things we don’t want to talk to our parents about.”

“PSHE helps with my anxiety. I have worries about what’s going to happen in the future. In PSHE I talk about my problems and people support me and I feel better.”
