Maths Statement of Intent

The teachers of St. James’ Catholic Primary School say…..

At St. James’ Catholic Primary School we believe that Mathematics is a fundamental life skill and recognise the essential part that mathematics plays in the education of our pupils. The 2014 National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

·      become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics

·      reason mathematically

·      can solve problems by applying their mathematics

Here at St. James’ we work towards these aims in our daily maths lessons, basic skills sessions and cross-curricular learning opportunities.

St. James’ pupils are encouraged to enjoy mathematics and become more enthusiastic mathematicians by developing their skills, knowledge and understanding through practical experiences, which have relevance and purpose in everyday situations. Within maths lessons children develop their mathematical skills, and their levels of perseverance and resilience, in order to become lifelong learners. They are given opportunities to apply mathematical knowledge in different situations across the curriculum and, as a result, should be able to apply these techniques outside of school. Mathematics equips our pupils with a set of tools to understand and change the world.
