Year 5
Dear Parents and Carers of Year 5 children,
First, a warm welcome to the Upper Juniors. This is an important transition time for your child as they start to get closer to
secondary school. With this in mind, we have put together a few details to help your child adapt to school life in Year 5.
PE DAY
Our PE day is on
Tuesdays. This may change throughout the year. The children will continue to attend school in their PE kit on their PE day and stay in it all day.
Children should wear:
- Trainers
- Plain navy sweatshirt/hoodie
- White Polo T-shirt or plain white T-shirt
- Navy or black tracksuit bottoms/leggings /shorts

READING
In Year 5, children are starting to become more independent readers. However, children will still need to read /discuss the text with a parent on a regular basis to check their understanding of the book and improve reading skills. It is recommended that children read for 15-20 minutes every day at home. This can include their own reading book from school, a new book from home or Reading Plus activities. Children will receive a reading record card (yellow) to note their daily reading on. Please sign this to confirm the pages read. This yellow card will need to be with them daily for adults to check reading.
Every other Friday, children will be asked to complete a reading comment, in the cream book provided, and as they begin to read longer texts, the comment may just focus on a few chapters or a given text. We encourage children to vary their comments by using the teacher’s guidance sticker which will be discussed in a reading session on Fridays.
On the alternate week, children will be asked to complete a couple of activities on Reading Plus (excluding vocabulary) instead of their written comment, thus ensuring a wide range of texts and genres are read and giving an opportunity for children to answer a range of questions.
Please ensure that you check your child has produced a well written comment and sign the signature box as evidence and that you check your child has completed the Reading Plus activities on the appropriate weeks.
Thank you.
SPELLING
Spellings will be given each week on a Friday in a book they bring home from school. The children will take part in various spelling activities in class throughout the week to help them learn their spellings, but they also need to spend some time learning them at home in a way that suits them best. A spelling test, and new spellings, will be given the following Friday.
HOMEWORK
As well as spelling and reading, your child will be set weekly maths tasks starting after the first couple of weeks. These tasks will be paper based or set on MyMaths, which your child will be given a login for. These will be given out on Thursdays and should be returned by the following Wednesday. Maths flashcards will be brought home to allow children to keep their basic skills (times tables etc) ticking over.
Children will receive a homework timetable from staff for reference at home.

Hopefully the above information will give you a good guide to what’s going on in our classroom. However, there are some occasions when days or routines must be changed due to holidays or other events in school such as trips, visits, special assemblies etc. Thank you for your continued support.
